Rosebud Alternatives: 5 AI Journals Compared Honestly

Five Rosebud alternatives for 2026, chosen for the reasons people leave: price, free AI, framing, voice and depth. Facts checked on each app's own site.

The best Rosebud alternative depends on why you are leaving. If it is the price, Reflection has a free AI coach. If you want sharper questions and patterns across entries, try Sorushi. For voice, Lound. For deep analysis, Mindsera.

Rosebud is a good app. It guides your writing with questions, remembers what you share, and sends weekly reports. This page is for the cases where it is not the right fit.

A note before you read. Sorushi is our app, and it is one of the five. Every app here, ours included, is described only from what its own website says. All facts were checked on each company's site on October 26, 2026. This compares documented features, not a hands-on test of each app's AI.

Key Takeaways

  • Rosebud retired its free plan on September 30, 2026, and Bloom costs $12.99 a month or $107.99 a year. Reflection, Sorushi and Dayora all have AI on a free plan.
  • Rosebud is framed around personal growth and well-being. Sorushi and Mindsera lean toward thinking and analysis instead.
  • If voice is what you use most, Lound is built for talking instead of typing.
  • Privacy differs a lot. Reflection and Mindsera state that entries are not used to train AI. Dayora says entries may be used for training.

Why people look for a Rosebud alternative

There are four common reasons.

Price. Rosebud retired its free plan on September 30, 2026, so using it now means paying for Rosebud Bloom, at $12.99 a month or $107.99 a year. Its help center says the upgraded memory system needs more resources to run, and that your writing stays available to export. Rosebud does list student and disability discounts, so check those first.

Framing. Rosebud presents itself as an AI journal for personal growth, with guided journals and a wellness feel. Some people want something plainer: a journal that questions their thinking without a self-care frame.

Voice or text. Rosebud supports voice journaling. If voice is the main thing you use, a voice-first app may suit you better. If you only type, you may want an app built around writing.

Privacy detail. Rosebud says data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Its homepage does not say whether entries are used to train AI. If that matters to you, pick an app that states it plainly, or read Rosebud's privacy policy.

The alternatives

Reflection

Reflection is the closest match if price is the reason you are leaving.

What it does differently. Its AI Coach asks follow-up questions about what you write, and its FAQ says the coach is included on the free plan. The free plan also has unlimited entries and guided monthly and annual reviews.

Price. Free Forever costs nothing. Premium is $8 a month, or $5.75 a month billed yearly, with a seven-day free trial. Premium adds unlimited AI features, unlimited syncing and more than 100 guided journals.

Privacy. Reflection says entries are encrypted with AES-256 at rest and TLS in transit. It says entries are never used to train AI models, even on the free plan. Its AI is powered by Google Gemini.

Platforms. iPhone, Android, Mac and web. Syncing is limited on the free plan.

Best for: people who want a guided AI journal like Rosebud without paying.

We compare it with our app in Sorushi vs Reflection.

Sorushi (ours)

Sorushi suits people who want questions about their thinking and patterns across weeks, without a wellness frame.

What it does differently. After an entry, it asks one to three questions aimed at what you wrote and skipped past. When it responds, it draws on a selection of your earlier entries. Over time it finds patterns and writes weekly and monthly reports. It has no clinical or self-care framing.

Price. The free plan does not expire. It includes unlimited journaling, one round of questions a day, patterns updated monthly and your first three reports. Pro is $8 a month, $72 a year, or $249 once.

Privacy. Entries are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM and in transit. Writing is sent to Anthropic's Claude only to write your own questions and reports, under terms that prohibit training on your data.

Platforms. Any web browser. There is no native phone app and no voice journaling yet.

Best for: people who type, and want a journal that pushes back on what they wrote.

See Sorushi vs Rosebud for the full comparison.

Dayora

Dayora is a free web journal that replies to every entry.

What it does differently. Every entry gets a short reply. Every fifth entry, it checks your last fifty for recurring patterns. Voice journaling with transcription is in the free core.

Price. The core is free with unlimited entries. Dayora Plus is $9 a month or $72 a year. Its site offers $6 a month, locked in, to anyone who joins before November 1, 2026.

Privacy. Dayora says it never sells entries. Its site also says Dayora may use your entries to train and improve the models and features that power it. It says the AI providers that write its replies may use what Dayora sends them to train their own models.

Platforms. Web browser only.

Best for: people who want an AI reply to every entry for free, and are comfortable with its training terms.

Lound

Lound is for people who mostly used Rosebud's voice journaling.

What it does differently. You talk, and Lound turns it into a journal entry with an AI reflection. It connects related entries and lets you chat with your journal.

Price. The free plan allows 10 entries and 30 recording minutes a day, with recordings up to five minutes and 50 chat messages a day. Premium exists, but its price is not stated on the site.

Privacy. Lound says audio is sent for transcription and is not kept as replayable audio on its servers by default. You can export or delete your journal.

Platforms. iPhone. Its site does not mention Android or web.

Best for: people who think out loud, on a walk or a commute.

Mindsera

Mindsera is the pick if you want more depth and structure than Rosebud, and are happy to pay for it.

What it does differently. It is built around writing frameworks, with more than 52 of them on the free plan. On the paid plan, it adds entry analysis, "Ask Your Journal", recurring topic detection, long-term emotion analysis and weekly review emails.

Price. The free Curious plan has no AI features. Genius is $14.99 a month, or $129 a year.

Privacy. Mindsera says writing is encrypted at rest and in transit. It says your data is not used to train or improve AI models, and that it does not sell your data.

Platforms. iPhone, Android and web. Mindsera says its AI is optimized for English.

Best for: analytical writers who like frameworks and detailed breakdowns.

When to stay with Rosebud

Stay if you like a guided, back-and-forth conversation on your phone. Rosebud does that well, and it has native iPhone and Android apps.

Stay too if you value its well-being framing, or if a student or disability discount brings the price down for you.
