Free AI Journal Apps: What You Actually Get for $0
Which AI journal apps are really free in 2026? Nine apps, plan by plan: what the AI does on the free plan, the limits, and the privacy catch.
Several AI journal apps have a real free plan with AI included. Reflection's AI Coach, Dayora's replies, Lound's voice reflections and Sorushi's daily questions are all free. Others, like Day One and Mindsera, are free to write in but keep their AI on a paid plan.
"Free" means different things on different apps. This guide checks what each one's free plan actually includes.
A note before you read. Sorushi is our app, and it is one of the nine. Every app here, ours included, is described only from what its own website says. All facts were checked on each company's site on October 26, 2026, except where a line says otherwise. This compares documented features, not a hands-on test of each app's AI.
Key Takeaways
- Four apps include clear AI features on their free plan: Reflection, Dayora, Lound and Sorushi. Each has different limits.
- Day One Basic and Mindsera Curious are free journals, but their AI is paid.
- Running AI costs money. Free plans pay for it with limits, upgrades or, in one case here, permission to train on your entries.
- Read the privacy page before writing anything personal. Reflection and Mindsera say entries are never used to train AI. Dayora says they may be.
How free AI journals pay for themselves
Every AI reply costs the app money, because it pays an AI provider to read your entry and write back. So a free AI plan is always paid for somehow.
Most apps use limits: a daily cap, a few free reports, or AI on some features only. They hope you upgrade later. That is a fair trade, as long as the limits are clear.
Some apps say they may use your entries to train AI models. Dayora's site says this directly, and says its AI providers' agreements help keep it free. It is honest to say so. Whether you accept it is up to you.
The apps, by how much AI is free
Reflection
Free AI. The AI Coach, which asks follow-up questions about what you write, is on the free plan according to Reflection's FAQ. Guided monthly and annual reviews are free too.
Free limits. One photo per entry and limited syncing across devices. Premium adds unlimited AI features.
Paid. $8 a month, or $5.75 a month billed yearly, with a seven-day trial.
Privacy. Reflection says entries are never used to train AI models, even on the free plan. Encryption is AES-256 at rest and TLS in transit.
Platforms. iPhone, Android, Mac and web.
Dayora
Free AI. A short reply to every entry, a pattern check every fifth entry across your last fifty, voice journaling with transcription, and an editable AI memory.
Free limits. Unlimited entries. Every account gets part of one Deep Self Report after seven entries.
Paid. Dayora Plus is $9 a month or $72 a year, or $6 a month locked in for anyone who joins before November 1, 2026.
Privacy. Dayora says it never sells entries. It also says it may use your entries to train and improve the models and features that power it, and that its AI providers may use what it sends them to train their own models.
Platforms. Web browser only.
Lound
Free AI. Voice entries with transcription, an AI reflection after each recording, insights that connect related entries, and chat with your journal.
Free limits. 10 entries and 30 recording minutes a day, recordings up to five minutes, and 50 chat messages a day. Meaning-based search is Premium only.
Paid. Premium exists, but its price is not stated on the site.
Privacy. Audio is not kept as replayable audio on Lound's servers by default. You can export or delete your journal.

Sorushi (ours)
Free AI. One round of one to three questions a day about what you wrote, pattern recognition updated monthly, and your first three weekly or monthly reports.
Free limits. Unlimited journaling, search, reminders, export and import. Goal tracking and the annual report are Pro only. The free plan does not expire.
Paid. Pro is $8 a month, $72 a year, or $249 once.

How to choose a free AI journal
Start with what you want the AI to do.
- Ask you questions: Reflection or Sorushi.
- Reply to every entry: Dayora.
- Listen instead of read: Lound.
- Help you start writing, privately, on Apple devices: Apple Journal.
Then read the privacy page. A free plan that trains on your entries is a different deal from one that does not, even if the features look the same.
Finally, check what happens to your writing if you leave. Look for export, and test it early.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a completely free AI journal app?
Apple Journal is completely free, with light AI help on devices with Apple Intelligence. Reflection, Dayora, Lound and Sorushi have free plans with real AI features, plus paid upgrades.
Which free AI journal does not train on my entries?
Reflection says entries are never used to train AI, even on its free plan. Sorushi uses Anthropic's Claude under terms that prohibit training on your data. Mindsera says the same, but its AI is paid.
Why do some journal apps charge for AI?
Every AI response costs the app money, because it pays a model provider for each one. That is why AI features are usually limited or paid, even when writing is free.
What is the best free AI journal for iPhone?
It depends on what you want. Apple Journal is built in and encrypted by default. Reflection offers a free AI coach. Lound is best if you prefer to speak your entries.
Can I use a free AI journal on the web?
Yes. Sorushi and Dayora run entirely in a web browser, and Reflection has a web app alongside its phone apps.
Start free, upgrade only if it earns it
A good free plan should let you feel what the AI does before you pay. Try one or two, and keep the one that changes how you think about what you wrote.
