Day One Alternatives with AI: 5 Options Compared

Want AI in your journal without Day One Gold? Five Day One alternatives with AI, from free plans to encrypted ones, checked on each app's own site.

Day One's AI features are on its Gold plan, at $74.99 a year. If you want AI in your journal for less, or a different kind of AI, there are good options. Reflection and Sorushi have AI on free plans. Apple Journal is free on Apple devices. Journey keeps end-to-end encryption.

Day One is one of the most polished journals you can use. It is built to keep a beautiful record of your life. This page is for people who want the journal to do more with what they wrote.

A note before you read. Sorushi is our app, and it is one of the five. Every app here, ours included, is described only from what its own website says. All facts were checked on each company's site on October 26, 2026, except where a line says otherwise. This compares documented features, not a hands-on test of each app's AI.

Key Takeaways

  • Day One Basic is free but has no AI. Silver is $49.99 a year, also without AI. Gold, at $74.99 a year, adds Daily Chat, AI summaries and Go Deeper prompts, with daily usage limits.
  • Reflection and Sorushi both include AI on a free plan, and both import or work alongside an existing journal.
  • Apple Journal is free and end-to-end encrypted in iCloud by default, but only on Apple devices.
  • An AI that reads your entries and end-to-end encryption pull against each other. Decide which matters more to you.

Why people look for a Day One alternative with AI

Day One is an archive first. Its AI is an add-on at the top of the price list.

The AI is on the top plan. Day One's pricing page lists Daily Chat, reflective AI summaries and prompts, Go Deeper prompts, entry summaries, title suggestions and image generation on Gold. Basic and Silver do not include them. The page also says AI features have daily usage limits.

People want a different kind of AI. Day One's AI helps you write and summarizes entries. Some people want a journal that asks hard questions, or finds patterns across months of writing.

Encryption and AI are a trade. Day One offers end-to-end encryption on every plan, including Basic. Any app whose AI reads your entries has to send them to a model. That is the structural cost of an AI journal, and it applies to every app on this list in some form.

The alternatives

Reflection

Reflection gives you an AI coach without paying, on almost every platform.

What its AI does. Its AI Coach asks follow-up questions based on what you write, and its FAQ says it is on the free plan. Guided monthly and annual reviews are free too.

Price. Free Forever costs nothing. Premium is $8 a month, or $5.75 a month billed yearly, with a seven-day trial.

Privacy. Entries are encrypted with AES-256 at rest and TLS in transit. Reflection says they are never used to train AI models, even on the free plan. Its AI is powered by Google Gemini.

What you give up compared with Day One. Day One's free plan has end-to-end encryption; Reflection describes encryption at rest and in transit. Reflection's free plan allows one photo per entry and limited syncing.

Best for: Day One users who want an AI coach and a free plan.

Sorushi (ours)

Sorushi suits writers who want the journal to question what they wrote, not just store it.

What its AI does. After an entry, it asks one to three questions about what you wrote and skipped past. When it responds, it draws on a selection of your earlier entries. It finds patterns, tracks goals you mention on Pro, and writes weekly and monthly reports.

Price. The free plan does not expire. It includes unlimited journaling, one round of questions a day, patterns updated monthly and your first three reports. Pro is $8 a month, $72 a year, or $249 once.

Your Day One archive comes with you. Sorushi imports the Journal.json file from a Day One export. Text comes across; rich formatting is flattened to plain text.

Privacy. Entries are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM and in transit. Writing is sent to Anthropic's Claude only to write your own questions and reports, under terms that prohibit training on your data. It is not end-to-end encrypted, because the model has to read an entry to respond to it.

What you give up compared with Day One. Native apps, photos in a rich archive, and end-to-end encryption. Sorushi runs in a web browser and is text first.

Best for: people who want questions and patterns, and do not need a photo archive.

See Sorushi vs Day One for the full comparison. Plenty of people keep Day One for the record and use Sorushi for the thinking.

Apple Journal

Apple Journal is the free choice for people who live on Apple devices.

What its AI does. Journaling Suggestions turn your photos, places and workouts into moments to write about. On devices with Apple Intelligence, it can suggest writing prompts based on what you write. (Features checked on Apple's site on October 11, 2026.)

Price. Free, built in.

Privacy. Apple's iCloud security overview lists Journal data as end-to-end encrypted under standard data protection, the default setting.

What you give up compared with Day One. Android, Windows and web. Apple does not describe reports that summarize your writing over time.

Best for: iPhone, iPad and Mac users who want free, encrypted journaling with light AI help.

Journey

Journey is the closest match to Day One's reach, on nearly every platform with end-to-end encryption.

What its AI does. Journey's site describes a WhatsApp chat that can reflect on past entries and save conversations as entries. It also offers coach programs. The site does not say which plan includes the AI features, or how they work with encryption.

Price. There is a free version you can use indefinitely. Membership is $4.17 a month billed yearly, and a lifetime purchase is available.

Privacy. Journey lists end-to-end encryption as a membership benefit and says it does not sell journal data.

What you give up compared with Day One. Its AI is less clearly documented. Check how the chat handles encrypted entries before relying on both.

Best for: people who write on Android, Windows or Linux as well as Apple devices.

Mindsera

Mindsera is for people who want the most analysis, and are willing to pay for it.

What its AI does. The paid Genius plan lists entry analysis, "Ask Your Journal", recurring topic detection, long-term emotion analysis, voice journaling and scanning of handwritten pages. The free plan has frameworks and habit tracking, but no AI.

Price. Genius is $14.99 a month, or $129 a year.

Privacy. Mindsera says writing is encrypted at rest and in transit, that data is not used to train or improve AI models, and that it does not sell your data.

What you give up compared with Day One. A free plan with AI, and a long-term photo archive. Mindsera says its AI is optimized for English.

Best for: analytical writers who want detailed breakdowns of their entries.

When to stay with Day One

Stay if your journal is mostly a record: photos, places, years of entries you want to keep safe and beautiful. Day One is excellent at that.

Gold is also worth a look before you switch. If its Daily Chat and summaries are what you want, $74.99 a year keeps everything in one app.
